The Lake Superior State University, Michigan, released the 38th annual List of Words to be Banished from the Queen’s English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness.
On top of the list we find “fiscal cliff”, followed by “spoiler alert”, “kick the can down the road”, “YOLO”, “bucket list”, “trending” and more – all in all the list contains 12 entries.
Meanwhile, the interpreter scratches her head and asks herself how to deal with such terms in case they come up in the booth. At the next conference, during the next presentation some of these expressions could be used for a laugh or two.
So I take a moment and think of some good solutions in case one of these banished, overused or generally useless words come up. Be prepared!
I just opened Google Translator, the star of machine translation, and entered “trending”. The brilliant Spanish translation read “tendencia”.
I am not impressed.
