Imagine sitting in a double-sized telephone booth (if you still remember the red British telephone booths…). The door is slammed shut just before the conference begins. Now the booth is soundproof – microphones and earphones are the only means of communication between speakers, interpreters and listeners. The post “My Workplace” shows you how a booth looks when you are inside. Soundproof means airtight also! Of course we open the door during coffee or lunch breaks, still it is nice and warm in our den (internal dimensions of a booth for two interpreters, like the one you see on the picture: 160 cm x 160 cm, height = 215 cm), for simultaneous interpreting entails a surge of adrenaline!
